- Manga artists are classified under "Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors and Illustrators," according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The mean hourly wage for manga illustrators is $25.52, or $53,080 annually. However, the profession's lower median hourly wage is $21.56, or $44,850 per year, suggesting that a small number of the highest-paid manga illustrators are raising the mean.
- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, manga artists in the 10th percentile earn only $9.22 per hour, just above the national minimum wage, or $19,190 per year. On the other end of the spectrum, manga artists in the 90th percentile earn a median hourly wage of $43.14 and a median annual salary of $89,720.
- New Mexico is the highest-paying state for illustrators -- with a mean hourly wage of $34.29 or $71,320 per year -- as of May 2010, according to the BLS. California and Indiana also feature high pay, the BLS reports, where manga artists are paid more than $65,000 annually. In Connecticut and Michigan, illustrators take home more than $60,000 per year, on average.
- California employs by far the most manga artists, according to the BLS. Almost 3,300 illustrators work there. New York, which employs 1,100, is the second-largest employer of manga artists. Florida, Michigan and Massachusetts also employ a significant number of illustrators.
Regionally, the areas with the most manga jobs are situated around major U.S. cities, according to the BLS. The Los Angeles metropolitan area is the largest employer at 2,210 illustrators, followed by New York (860) and other large cities, such as Boston, Atlanta and Chicago.
- According to the BLS, artist jobs are expected to grow about as quickly as the national average for all professions. A positive employment change of 12 percent in the art sector is expected from 2008 to 2018. However, competition for both freelance and salaried positions is expected to remain high due to the level of interest among artists. Unfortunately the BLS predicts a decline in the amount of publishing opportunities, due to the number of magazines opting for online-only formats
